Administrative Services

Members of the public may submit a complaint form regarding their experience with any Sheriff's Office employee. Complaints may include unprofessional behavior, misconduct, excessive use of force, or other concerns related to the employee's conduct. All submissions are reviewed by internal staff, and, when appropriate, a formal investigation will be conducted. Depending on the outcome, corrective action or disciplinary measures may be taken.

Appointments must be scheduled in advance and are available Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on county holidays. The Live Scan service itself is $28.00, but if applicable, there will be additional fees from the Department of Justice (DOJ) or FBI. 

Applicants are required to bring a valid government-issued ID and Live Scan forms completely filled out.

Our department allows members of the public to ride-along with a Sheriff’s Office Deputy as they patrol Monterey County. This allows the applicant to see first-hand calls-for-service and law enforcement operations.

PC602(O) allows law enforcement, at request of landowner or valid agent, to lawfully enforce trespassing laws on a specified property. After submitting this request, Sheriff’s Deputies will have the right to arrest trespassers without issuing warnings. This request only lasts for a 30 day window.

Vehicle Abatement is a legal process used primarily for removing abandoned and neglected vehicles and other items from private property. Vehicles are abated according to County Ordinance 12.72 and under provisions of the California Vehicle Code, including sections 22660 CVC and 22661 CVC.

An abatement action can be taken after a notice is posted on the vehicle and the property owner is mailed a notice of the County's intent to abate the vehicle, trailer, and boat or vehicle part (s).

Property owners are also subject to being cited for permitting or maintaining a PUBLIC NUISANCE, and may be billed by the County or have a lien placed against their real property for the costs of removal and abatement.

Once vehicles or other items are towed for any reason except abatement, a vehicle may be released. A vehicle release form is needed from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department. For more information, read the section below titled "Vehicle Releases".

Abated vehicles towed or removed under an abatement process that falls under California Vehicle Code section 22661 CAN NOT be released and will be destroyed by an auto dismantler.

Vehicle releases are available 8am to 8pm. The following items are required for release:

• $136.00 for the vehicle release fee.

• Vehicle must have current registration.

• Valid driver's license of the registered owner, or government-issued ID of the registered owner and must be accompanied by a licensed driver.
