Physical Agility and Written Exam Dates: October 24, 2026 and January 23, 2027, at 8:00 AM. Scheduling isrequired. Applications are screened monthly. Exam Location: Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, 1414 Natividad Road,Salinas, CA 93906.

WRITTEN WAIVER: The written exam may be waived for applicants who have graduated from an approved CA P.O.S.T Police Academy, currently enrolled in a CA P.O.S.T approved Police Academy, or for applicants who have previously taken the P.O.S.T. Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) written exam within one year and possess a minimum T-Score of 42. A copy of the certificate must be included with the application. 

PHYSICAL AGILITY WAIVER: The physical agility may be waived for applicants who have previously passed the Monterey County physical agility exam or South Bay Regional Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) physical agility exam within 12 months with a minimum overall score of 320. A copy of the certificate must be included with the application.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is seeking individuals to work in the Correction Operations Bureau. Deputy Sheriffs assigned to work in the jail are responsible for the security, custody, transport, and supervision of incarcerated individuals and may serve as a Court Bailiff. 

Candidates will be considered at both the Deputy Sheriff-Corrections and Deputy Sheriff-Recruit levels. Incumbents appointed as Deputy Sheriff-Recruit may be promoted to Deputy Sheriff–Corrections upon successfully graduating an approved CA P.O.S.T. Police BASIC academy and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority in accordance with the Flexible Staffing Program and Guidelines. 

DEPUTY SHERIFF RECRUITS: Are “at-will” employees and are sworn in as Deputy Sheriff-Corrections upon graduation from the CA P.O.S.T. Academy. Failure to graduate or to meet the Sheriff’s Office standards is cause for release from this position.

Examples of Deputy Sheriff-Corrections duties:

  1. Supervise and controls behavior and activities of persons confined to the Sheriff's Corrections Operation Bureau facilities.

  2. Conducts strip, skin and pat down searches of persons; determines the presence of contraband.

  3. Conducts initial investigation of incarcerated persons complaints, accidents or crime that occur within the facility.

  4. Books and receives incarcerated persons upon admission to county jail; classifies incarcerated persons according to security risk factors and determines location and number of persons within facilities.

  5. Conducts physical head count of incarcerated persons to determine location and number of persons within facilities.

  6. Transports incarcerated persons to and from jail facilities, court, hospital or medical appointments.

  7. Transports criminals or fugitives from anywhere in the United States for extradition purposes.

  8. Prepares written reports and maintains various agency records.

  9. Inspects jail facilities for the presence of illegal activities, contraband or damages

  10. Answers any inquiries from the public and other law enforcement personnel pertaining to jail policies and incarcerated person as allowed by departmental regulations.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is actively recruiting motivated men and women who have successfully graduated from a California Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) approved police academy; or possess a valid California Basic P.O.S.T. certificate to apply for Deputy Sheriff-Operations  

The Sheriff 's Office is comprised of the Administration, Corrections and Enforcement Operation Bureaus.  The Sheriff’s Office delivers public safety to the residents of Monterey County by providing 24-hour uniformed patrol, investigations, custody services, court security, and law enforcement support. 

Deputies hired in these positions will work in the Enforcement Operations Bureau and patrol an assigned area of Monterey County, enforce state and local laws, perform crime prevention and crime detection activities, perform community relations activities, and perform other related work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Patrols assigned areas in an automobile, on foot or by other means for the keeping of peace and protection of life and property

  • Writes and prepares complete and accurate investigative reports, supplemental and follow-up reports as required by law enforcement and departmental policy

  • Issues citations and/or apply proper techniques of arrest, search, and seizure in the apprehension of suspects, and transports suspects to the County jail

  • Conducts investigations at scenes of accidents and crimes; conducts the identification, preservation, and collection of evidence; interviews witnesses to ascertain facts; interrogates suspects involved in or suspected to be involved in crimes

  • Serves civil process documents such as subpoenas, summonses, complaints, writs of attachment, execution and restitution

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Working knowledge of:

  • Criminal law including the laws of arrest, search and seizure and rules of evidence and crime prevention methods 

  • Code of Civil Procedure and the Civil Code of California

  • Correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; proper use of words, sentence structure, paragraph construction in order to write comprehensive narrative reports.

  • The principles of human behavior and mediation; criminal attitudes and behavior patterns on the social factors underlying criminal behavior

  • Court procedures in criminal and civil cases.

Skill and Ability to: 

  • Use tact, logical reasoning and sensitivity when dealing with problems of the general public

  • Control volatile situations through command presence, leadership ability and decisiveness.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, members of the public and other law enforcement agencies contacted through the course of work; respond in a positive manner to supervision and direction; and attend and perform duties on a regular, reliable, and consistent basis.

  • Use restraint equipment and firearms.

  • Work effectively in a calm and professional manner with uncooperative or irate individuals and de-escalate potentially hostile and dangerous situations. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Pursuant to Sections 1029, 1031, and 1031.4 of the California Government Code, incumbents must meet the minimum requirements established for Peace Officers

  2. Pursuant to Section 832.4 of the California State Penal Code, incumbents must have successfully graduated from a California Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) approved police academy; or possess a valid California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate issued by the California Commission on P.O.S.T

  3. Must be at least 20 1/2 years of age at the date of application and 21 years of age at the date of appointment

  4. Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, which includes a polygraph examination or voice stress analysis and medical and psychological examinations 

  5. Maintain the standards established by the California Commission of P.O.S.T. and the Sheriff’s Office 

  6. Work flexible hours, shifts, weekends and holidays, and subject to hold-over and call-back duty

  7. Possess and maintains a valid California Class C driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles by the time of hire

  8. Work in various locations throughout the County of Monterey

  9. Wear a uniform or appropriate attire for non-uniform duties

The Monterey County Sheriff 's Office is comprised of the Administration, Corrections and Enforcement Patrol Operation Bureaus. The Sheriff’s Office delivers public safety to the residents of Monterey County by providing 24-hour patrol, investigations, custody services, court security, and law enforcement support.  

The Sheriff’s Office seeks a Sheriff's Work Alternative Specialist to work in the Corrections Operations Bureau. This non-safety position evaluates and determines job placement of individuals participating in the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Sentencing Program; processes, monitors and maintains all records associated with program requirements; and performs other work as required. 

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs booking and recordkeeping activities, as needed, including photographing, fingerprinting, book and release, computing completion dates, and work site assignments.
  • Utilizes multiple criminal justice information automated systems to enter, access and retrieve information.
  • Receives legal documents and papers for processing, examines documents and forms for compliance with established policies and regulations; index, cross-reference and arrange records, documents and correspondence in a variety of files and computerized information systems.
  • Creates, maintains and monitors manual and computerized files to ensure compliance from enrollment to completion; closes out files according to completion or failure and notify all parties of outcome through established notification guidelines.
  • Schedules, interviews and screens participants for local placement including assigning worksite, schedules work dates, calculates completion date; notifies and provides participants of the program rules and regulations and repercussions of non-compliance; prepares participant referrals for transfers to out of county/state agencies.
  • Receives, investigates, reports and takes appropriate action on problems reported towards clients including criminal activities, hazardous conditions, security concerns and violations of program rules and regulations.
  • Assist worksite supervisor in completing documentation for Workers’ Compensation claims for on-the-job injuries of participants; follow up on participant’s medical status and address accommodation requests within program and County guidelines.
  • Reviews and processes sentencing orders/booking documents, determines work site eligibility, schedules, interviews and evaluates participant for enrollment into the program based on charges, court disposition and prior enrollment; queries for additional outstanding warrants.
  • Conducts site checks on participants and site supervisors to ensure program compliance including work safety, misconduct, accurate reporting of records; maintains regular contact with both participants and worksite supervisors to resolve problems; may reschedule, reassign or recommend removal from program participation.
  • Recruits and enroll community non-profit organizations and governmental agencies to provide placement opportunities; inform and monitor organizations for program compliance.
  • Responds to inquiries from courts, local and out of county/state agencies and the public; may testify in court.
  • Prepares daily, monthly and annual statistical and financial reports of program bookings, participant hours, completion and/or failure to comply.

Working Knowledge of:

  • Codes, laws and principles of alternative sentencing services and the functions and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • California Welfare and Institutions Code, California Penal Code, California Health and Safety, and California Vehicle Code as they pertain to incarceration.
  • Methods and systems of legal enforcement, corrections and court procedures.
  • Effective written and oral communications. 

Some Knowledge of:

  • Criminal justice and legal terminology; court ordered and legal documents.
  • Investigation and interviewing techniques.
  • Effective customer service principles and techniques.
  • Report writing and recordkeeping procedures and practices.

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Education:

Completion of two years of college-level coursework at an accredited college or university in criminal justice, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field.

Experience:

Two years of clerical or technical experience providing knowledge of the operations and procedures in a criminal or institutional setting that includes independent interpretation and application of routine rules and regulations.

OR

Any combination of work experience and college coursework to total two years.
