Branch History
San Lucas is a small farming town located in South Monterey County, just off U.S. Highway 101, seven miles south of King City. It was established in 1886 by Alberto Trescony, who owned the San Lucas and San Benito land grants. Rancho San Lucas, which spans over 8,000 acres and is one of the original Spanish land grants, was purchased by Trescony when Monterey was still under Mexican rule. It continues to operate as a ranch today.
MCFL established the San Lucas branch on June 26, 1916. In 2017, thanks to the dedication of the San Lucas community, the County of Monterey, and the generosity of Mary Agnes Young’s family, the Sarmentos, the library opened its doors to enthusiastic patrons. This library honors Young, who was born in San Lucas and served as a library custodian in Gonzales.
