Branch History
San Ardo is the heart of the oil industry in Monterey County, located on the east side of Highway 101, between San Lucas and Bradley. The town was founded in 1886 by Meyer Brandenstein on the San Bernardo ranch and was originally named "Bernardo." It is believed that the U.S. Postal Service renamed it San Ardo to prevent confusion with San Bernardino.
The San Ardo Branch Library initially operated as a summer branch, with Miss Ursula Whitney serving as its custodian in 1916. The library opened at its current location on April 12, 1986.
