Branch History
King City is an incorporated city located in the heart of the southern Salinas Valley. It was named after Charles Henry King, who developed the town on the site of the old Rancho San Lorenzo when the Southern Pacific railroad extended its line to that area in July 1886. Originally known as Kings City, the name was changed in 1890 when the local newspaper dropped the "s." On February 9, 1911, it was officially incorporated as "The City of King" and is commonly referred to as King City.
The first free public library in King City was established in 1913 and began offering services on February 10, 1914. Thanks to the City of King, the State of California, and the County of Monterey, the King City Library opened its doors at its current location in the former Bank of America building on November 6, 1997.
