Branch History
Greenfield began as a tent city called “Three Mile Flat.” The town was founded on land that was originally purchased and resold by John S. Clark, known as the Joaquin de la Torre land grant. Nearly 300 families united to buy a substantial portion of the former Rancho Arroyo Seco. Greenfield was officially incorporated in 1947.
The Greenfield Library was the first library in Monterey County, established on January 8, 1914, in the home of Mrs. Ida M. Clark. The current Greenfield Library Branch held its grand opening on April 10, 1994, becoming the first county-owned library. This 7,100-square-foot building features murals painted by local artist Cindy Davis, which depict the town of Greenfield, and a full-wall quilt created by the Greenfield Quilters showcases the area’s history.
