Branch History
Gonzales is situated on the land grant given to Teodoro Gonzalez in 1836, known as Rancho Rincon de la Puente del Monte, which encompasses approximately 15,000 acres south of Salinas. Teodoro deeded this land to his sons, Alfredo and Mariano, who founded the town in 1874. Gonzales is recognized as the "Wine Capital of Monterey County."
The Gonzales Branch was established on May 20, 1915. Miss Agnes Young served as the first custodian of the library from its opening until February 1919. The library moved to its current location and has operated there since 2008. Construction of the new branch library and community center commenced in early 2024, thanks to the collaborative efforts of public servants and community volunteers. This facility, along with the MCFL branch, will feature a teen innovation center and an amphitheater.
