Branch History
Juan Bautista Castro, believing that the county's development relied on breaking up and populating the large ranches, divided his land and offered incentives to settlers, consequently founding Castroville. Less than a decade later, in 1869, the Monterey County supervisors officially established the township of Castroville.
Founded on November 21, 1914, the library has flourished in various locations, including homes, post offices, hardware stores, and novelty shops. Today, it operates in a modern facility, thanks to the dedication of many committed community members. In 2006, it was renamed the Andy Ausonio Library to honor a supporter of the Monterey County Free Libraries, the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries, and the Friends of the Library. The Castroville Branch Library celebrated its centennial in 2014 and has a rich and diverse history of serving the community, which is known for its nearby artichoke fields.
