All Monterey County Free Library locations will be closed from December 24 to January 1. Locations will resume normal hours on Friday, January 2, 2026.

Below are a list of recommended resources curated by MCFL Librarians. All of these resources are FREE for teens and are both educational and fun!

  • Carnegie Learning iCulture A cultural immersion resource for Spanish, French and German language learners that includes travel videos, day-in-the-life videos, and current news articles. This resource is FREE through the end of the school year.
  • Codecademy Users can learn to code interactively in twelve different programming languages.
  • Khan Academy Practice exercises and instructional videos for kindergarten to calculus.
  • Leaving the Military For students whose families are leaving the military, this is a set of 3 short videos that speak directly to those challenges. Students will find good transition advice as the child of a Veteran.
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium Live Variety of live web cams featuring the various animals at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Narrated feedings are also offered daily.
  • NASA STEM Page Activities and opportunities selected by NASA STEM experts for all grade levels.
  • Vidcode Vidcode allows users to create video filters, simulations, augmented reality and other creative projects, all while learning the fundamentals of computer science and web programming.

Award Winners:

  • Alex Award The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.
  • Evergreen Teen Book Award The Evergreen Teen Book Award, sponsored by the Washington Young Adult Review Group, has been sharing books with teens since 1992. Each year the Evergreen Committee, made up of school and public librarians, selects from a list of titles nominated by librarians and educators for consideration.
  • Printz Award The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.
  • ALA Banned Books Every year, ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools. The lists are based on information from confidential reports filed by library professionals and community members, as well as news stories published throughout the United States.
