Early Literacy Mobile Outreach Programs

Hello, welcome to our Preschool Literacy Outreach Page.

Our Mission at Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) is to bring ideas, inspiration, information, and enjoyment to our community - including preschoolers!

Our two early literacy mobile outreach programs, Reading Machine and STREAM, are designed to provide library services and literacy to needs-based preschool classrooms throughout Monterey County, including Head Starts, Mexican America Opportunity Foundation preschools (MAOFs), Cooperative preschools (Co-ops), and other early learning locations. Both programs are conducted by MCFL-trained staff.

Classrooms enrolled in these programs receive monthly visits October through May. Visits include a storytime and a visit to our bookmobile, Lean Green Reading Machine. With parent permission, each preschooler will receive their own library card to borrow one book a month.

Classrooms are also provided with themed kits containing age-appropriate books and teaching materials to be used at the teacher's discretion. These kits are swapped out each month for a new kit based on that month's theme.

These programs are funded by Monterey County Free Libraries and the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries and are offered FREE to classrooms.

Reading Machine Program:

The Reading Machine Program is focused on bringing social skills and literacy concepts to preschool classrooms.

• Colors, Shapes, Numbers
• Nursery Rhymes & Tales
• Nutrition

STREAM Program:

The STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Agriculture and Mathematics) Program is focused on bringing science literacy concepts to preschool classrooms through storytime and hands-on demonstrations.

• Water Cycle
• Sound
• Ocean
