Welcome to the website for the Monterey County Public Administrator/Guardian/Conservator Office.

Our office is responsible for ensuring the physical and financial safety of county residents who are unable to care for themselves or to protect and administer the assets of those who have passed away.

The Public Administrator, Guardian, or Conservator conducts official county investigations and will only act as the appointed Administrator, Guardian, or Conservator for individuals who meet the legal criteria, as determined through a formal hearing.

The Superior Court will decide whether a Conservator or Administrator should be appointed. The conservatorship process involves petitioning the court and notifying the proposed conservatee and their family about the proceedings. Similarly, the administration process includes petitioning the court and notifying any next of kin about the proceedings.

In every conservatorship or administration case, the court will automatically appoint an attorney to represent the proposed conservator or estate.

The Monterey County Public Administrator, Guardian, or Conservator will only act as a last resort when no other suitable individuals are available to take on the responsibility.
