Miranda Rescue FAQ

Miranda's Rescue is a rescue organization in Fortuna, California, that previously partnered with Hitchcock Road Animal Services (HRAS) by accepting dogs for adoption opportunities. The organization is currently the subject of an investigation by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.

HRAS partners with rescue organizations to increase lifesaving opportunities for animals that may not be adopted locally. Dogs are transferred when they remain adoptable but have been overlooked or may benefit from placement in a different community.

HRAS transferred approximately 85 dogs to Miranda's Rescue between 2020 and early 2026.

All three dogs, Kat, Skipper and Zora, appeared healthy, had no immediate medical concerns, and had gained weight since leaving HRAS.

HRAS gave Zorra, Kat and Skipper a week or so to readjust and then began to get to know them again. While all 3 dogs were seemingly better behaved than prior to transfer, they all have very distinct behaviors that have made it hard for immediate placement. Each dog require an owner who understands their individual needs and can provide appropriate care and management. HRAS also was keeping an eye out for a local rescue partner that had adequate resources for those needs and is evaluating on a case by case basis.
