Voter Registration Update Needed: Residential Address

Voter registration records are based on residential addresses. Only when a voter's residence does not have an assigned address may they register using a description of their location. A residential address determines an individual's elected officials, ballot contests, voting districts and voting precinct.

Now that residents of Carmel-by-the-Sea have been assigned formal addresses, voters must re-register using the newly assigned residential address. 

Register to Vote Using Your New Residential Address

Update your voter registration:

• Online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov

• By paper registration, available at libraries, post offices, city halls, or the Monterey County Elections Office. A paper form can also be mailed upon request by calling (831) 796-1499.  

 When updating your registration, enter your newly assigned residential address in the Home Address field. 

Residence vs. Mailing Address

Both residential and mailing addresses are essential parts to your voter registration record. 

• Your residential address tells us where you live for voting purposes.

• Your mailing address tells us where to send your ballot and all election-related mail.

Continue to list your P.O. Box or separate mailing address in the Mailing Address field when registering or updating your voter record.

Use Your New Residential Address for All Election Purposes

Once you have updated your voter registration, your new residential address will be used for all future election-related activities, including:

• In-person voting

• Signing petitions

• Any voter-related declarations or confirmations

• Running for public office

Look for Official Election Mail

The Monterey County Elections Office will send official mailings to Carmel-by-the-Sea voters, including:

• A postcard with a link to the official RegistertoVote.ca.gov website.

• Follow-up registration mailing for voters who have not yet updated their records.

If your mailing address receives election mail for someone no longer at that address, please mark the mailing accordingly and return it to the postal carrier.
