Employees

Departments are responsible for providing all employees with designated department occupational safety and health training on general and job-specific hazards, and safe work practices.  Each department should develop an occupational health and safety-training plan for employees with similar job hazards that include Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) training, job-specific training, and regulatory program training requirements.

Each department provides safety training and instruction when:

  • Safety policies and programs are first established or revised
  • New employees are hired (onboarding)
  • Employees are assigned to a new area or task where specialized training is needed
  • New substances, operations, procedures, or equipment are introduced

Supervisors & Managers

Supervisors and Managers require a higher level of training to include all health and safety hazards to which employees under their immediate direction and control are exposed.  This training may include accident and incident investigation, DOT supervisor training, train-the-trainer, and more.

Non-Full Time Employees

Each department is responsible for the delivery of job-specific health and safety training to extra-help, temporary, volunteers and contract employees.  This requirement will apply for County employees from other departments assigned to work in their operation or facility.

Training Resources

County Learning Management System (LMS): LMS offers 1500+ prebuilt training courses with a wide variety of content.  This system also allows departments to upload or build out custom courses to fit their specific needs.

Target Solutions: The County has partnered with Vector Solutions in the offering of stocked online computer-based training which allows departments to assign, track, and report on training, compliance, and continuing education requirements.

Cal/OSHA Safety & Health Training and Instruction Requirements: The following is a list of the instruction and training requirements contained in the Construction Safety Orders (Subchapter 4) and the General Industry Safety Orders (Subchapter 7) of Title 8, Division 1, Chapter 4 (with several references contained in Chapter 3.2) of the California Code of Regulations. Also included are references to both Competent Person and Qualified Person.

For additional safety training resources, departments can contact Risk Management or the County Safety Officer.
